Do I Have a Dental Emergency?

What Dental Problems Need Emergency Care?

tooth-2.png

Severe Tooth Pain

Pain that throbs, lingers after hot or cold, or keeps you awake usually means the nerve inside the tooth is irritated or infected. Treating it early often keeps more of the tooth and avoids a longer, more involved repair later.

tooth.png

Facial or Gum Swelling

Swelling around a tooth, in the gums or along the jaw often signals an abscess. A dental infection can spread to surrounding tissue, so swelling should be seen by a dentist promptly rather than left to settle on its own.

tooth-1.png

Broken or Cracked Tooth

Cracks can travel deeper with every bite. A broken tooth may be sharp, sensitive or painful, and early repair gives your dentist more options to protect what remains.

happy-tooth.png

Knocked-Out Tooth

When a permanent tooth is knocked out, speed matters most. Reaching a dentist within about 30 to 60 minutes gives the tooth its strongest chance of being placed back successfully.

tooth-2.png

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown leaves the softer tooth underneath open to sensitivity, decay and breakage. It is rarely a crisis, but plan to be seen within a day or two.

Dental Trauma

A hit to the face from hockey, a fall on ice or a car accident can loosen teeth or fracture roots without obvious signs. An exam and imaging after any significant blow can catch damage early.

Before You Reach the Dentist

What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Knocked-Out Tooth

Find the tooth and handle it only by the chewing surface, never the root. If it is dirty, swish it briefly in milk or tap water, without scrubbing. Slide it back into the socket if you can and hold it there by biting gently on a clean cloth. If not, put it in a small container of milk and call us immediately. Baby teeth should not be put back in.

Broken Tooth

Collect any pieces of the tooth and keep them in a clean container. Rinse your mouth with warm water, and press a cold pack against your cheek for comfort. Cover any jagged edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum, chew on the other side, and call us for an appointment.

Facial Swelling

Place a cold pack on the outside of the swollen area in 15-minute intervals, and avoid heat, which can make swelling worse. Call our office as soon as you can.

Lost Filling or Crown

Keep the crown safe in a sealed bag and bring it to your visit. Avoid sticky foods and chewing on that side. A temporary dental cement from the pharmacy can cover the tooth briefly, but never use household glues. Call us to book within a day or two.

Severe Toothache

Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss around the tooth in case food is trapped. An over-the-counter pain reliever, used exactly as the label directs, and a cold pack on your cheek may ease discomfort. Never rest a tablet against your gum, as it can damage the tissue. Then call us to be seen.

⚠️ Medical emergency warning: Go to the nearest hospital emergency department or call 911 if swelling spreads toward your eye or neck, makes breathing or swallowing difficult, or comes with a fever.

Same-Day Appointments

We keep space in our daily schedule for urgent cases. When you call, we offer the earliest available time, and in many cases that means today.

Walk-Ins Welcome

If you cannot get through by phone, you can come to our office during opening hours. Calling first is still the quickest way to secure a time, since it lets us prepare before you arrive.

3D Imaging On Site

Our office holds a CT scanner facility permit. When a regular X-ray is not enough, such as with a suspected root fracture after an injury, 3D cone beam imaging can be done right here without a referral elsewhere.

Experienced General Dentist

Your emergency visit is with Dr. Ahmed Ameen, a general dentist registered with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario with more than 25 years of experience. He assesses the problem, explains your options clearly, and focuses on relieving your pain first.

New Patients Welcome

You do not need to be a current patient or have a referral. We see new emergency patients and set up your file when you arrive.

What Happens During an Emergency Visit

What to Expect at Your Emergency Dental Appointment

1

Call First

Call our emergency hotline number and describe your symptoms. We will book the soonest time and explain what to do until you get here.

2

Urgent Assessment

Your dentist examines the problem tooth, asks about your pain and medical history, and takes X-rays or 3D images if needed.

3

Diagnosis

We explain the cause of your pain in plain language and outline each treatment option, along with its cost.

4

Pain Relief and Treatment

Once you choose a plan, we focus first on relieving your pain and stabilizing the problem, often during the same visit.

5

Follow-Up Care

If more treatment is needed, we schedule it before you leave and give you clear home care instructions.

Emergency Dental Treatments

Emergency Dental Treatments We Provide

Emergency care at Sky Dental Centre is provided by general dentists.

tooth-2.png

Emergency Tooth Extraction

When a tooth is too badly broken or infected to save, removing it can stop the pain and keep infection from spreading. We talk through replacement options before the extraction.

tooth.png

Root Canal Therapy

If infection has reached the nerve, root canal therapy cleans and seals the inside of the tooth. It often relieves a severe toothache and may save the natural tooth.

tooth-1.png

Dental Crowns

A tooth with a large break or a recent root canal often needs a crown for strength. If a permanent crown is not possible right away, a temporary one can protect the tooth in the meantime.

happy-tooth.png

Treatment for Broken Teeth

Minor chips may be smoothed or bonded, while bigger breaks may need a filling or crown. Your dentist matches the repair to how much tooth structure is left.

tooth-2.png

Treatment for Dental Trauma

After an injury, we use X-rays and 3D imaging to look for hidden fractures, stabilize loose teeth with a splint when needed, and monitor healing at follow-up visits.

Emergency Dental Cost

How Much Does Emergency Dental Care Cost?

The cost of emergency dental care in Thunder Bay depends on what is wrong and what it takes to fix it. We cannot quote a price before your dentist examines you, but you will always receive an estimate before treatment starts.

Examination

Most emergency visits begin with a focused exam of the painful or injured area. This tells your dentist what is causing the problem and how urgent it is.

X-Rays and 3D Imaging

X-rays show decay, infection and cracks below the surface. If more detail is needed, 3D CBCT imaging may be recommended. We only take the images your diagnosis requires.

Complexity and Treatment

A simple filling costs less than a root canal, crown or extraction. Some problems are stabilized at the first visit and finished at a second appointment, and we explain the cost of each stage.

Insurance and Payment Options

Most dental insurance plans cover part of emergency exams and treatment, and we bill many insurers directly. We also accept the Canada Dental Care Plan. OHIP does not generally cover dental treatment in a dental office. Ask our team about options for larger treatment costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a dental emergency?

Any tooth or mouth problem that threatens a tooth, involves infection or causes pain you cannot manage is a dental emergency. Severe toothache, facial swelling, a knocked-out tooth and a broken tooth all qualify. A lost filling usually is not urgent, but it should still be seen within a day or two.

Yes, Sky Dental Centre offers same-day emergency appointments when available. Call 807-623-9445 as early in the day as you can and describe your symptoms, so we can judge how urgently you need to be seen and reserve the right amount of time for your visit.

Pick the tooth up by the crown, rinse it briefly in milk if it is dirty, and gently place it back in the socket if you can. If that is not possible, store it in milk and phone us immediately. Seeing a dentist within about 30 to 60 minutes gives the tooth its strongest chance.

Call our office right away and hold a cold pack against the outside of your face in 15-minute intervals. If the swelling reaches your eye or neck, or makes it hard to breathe or swallow, go to the nearest hospital emergency department or call 911 without waiting for a dental appointment.

The cost depends on your exam, any imaging and the treatment you need, so we cannot quote a fixed price in advance. You will receive an estimate before any treatment begins. We bill many insurance plans directly and accept the Canada Dental Care Plan to help reduce your out-of-pocket cost.

Yes, Sky Dental Centre welcomes new patients for emergency care, and no referral is needed. Call us or come in during office hours. Bring your insurance or CDCP details and a list of any medications you take, and we will set up your patient file at your visit.

When the office is closed, our voicemail is checked first thing the next business day, and we will call you back. For free health advice at any hour, you can call Health811 by dialing 811. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling is spreading quickly, call 911.

Usually not. Hospital emergency departments in Ontario can treat severe pain, spreading infection and swelling, but they generally do not extract teeth or repair them. For most toothaches and broken teeth, calling a dental office first is the faster route to fixing the problem itself.
